Store Credit FAQ

CAN I BRING IN BOOKS FOR STORE CREDIT?

Yes! Accepting books for store credit helps to keep our inventory fresh. We also love to know which books you liked, in order to be able to recommend them to other readers.

WHAT KINDS OF BOOKS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

We accept books for the Lansing store that relate directly to our mission of creating a place where communities most impacted by oppression can see themselves accurately reflected in stories of history and the present, and learn of ways to strategically work together to build toward collective power.

We accept books and audiobooks that center our BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), Chicano/a and Latinx communities, LBGTQIA+ (Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual,+), Immigrants, asylum seekers and Refugees, persons with disabilities and neuro-divergent individuals, persons with justice system experience, womxn and femmes, survivors/victims of sexual, domestic and emotional violence, aging populations, persons living with HIV, persons experiencing houselessness, and persons living in poverty.

The books can be fiction or any genre nonfiction; adult, YA or children. We are also interested in social movements and community building; science; and healing and spirituality.

The owner may refuse specific books if the condition is poor or has a history of not selling here.

We do not accept magazines or VHS tapes.

HOW MANY BOOKS CAN I BRING IN?

Due to time and resources, please limit your delivery to two medium sized boxes a month, in store. In order to speed up the process, we may give you store credit by the box, so you can use it immediately. If you have more books to bring in, please call ahead for an appointment to drop off books.

DO I NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

Appointments are currently not necessary for small donations.

DO YOU PAY CASH FOR BOOKS?

No.

HOW DOES YOUR STORE CREDIT WORK?

To receive store credit a profile is created in the bookstore system. Profiles can be by individual or family. When scanned in, the credit applied will be approximately 50% off of the store price (store price = the price we assign a used book), depending on the condition of the book.

When you purchase books from the store, the store credit will cover 50% of the cost of a new book. For example, a book costs $5. Store credit covers $2.50, you pay $2.50, plus tax, until your store credit runs out. You can used 75% store credit toward used books. (And if that leaves a book financially inaccessible just let us know, we are flexible.)

Store credit cannot be used on gift shop items or special order books.

I DON'T WANT STORE CREDIT. WILL YOU JUST TAKE MY BOOKS?

Yes. Thank you so much. Because of the books recieved from the community, we are often able to pay it forward by supporting local classrooms, school libraries, prison/jail libraries, and other non-profits.

CAN I GIVE MY STORE CREDIT TO SOMEONE ELSE? (Donate to the Knowledge Bank!)

Yes! If you have someone in mind, that is fine, otherwise, we suggest you donate your credit to the Knowledge Bank! The Knowledge Bank is our credit reserve that allows us to make up the difference for customers who can't afford a book, new or used. Your cash donations to The Resistance can also help serve this purpose.

The Resistance receives book donations on site at 515 W. Ionia 2, Lansing, MI 48933 every Saturday 8-10am, and Sunday morning from 9-11am with immediate processing of book credit or a donation receipt toward the nonprofit. During business hours there may be a wait.
